How to make minor repairs to granite sinks?

13 / 04 / 2023 sinks

Repairing a granite sink can be done using special adhesive or resin that is used for stone repairs. Follow this procedure:

  • Clean the sink: Before starting the repair, thoroughly clean the area around the damage. Use soapy water or a special cleaning agent intended for granite, then rinse the area thoroughly and dry it.
  • Purchase adhesive or resin: To repair a granite sink, you will need special adhesive or resin designed for stone repairs, such as epoxy resin. These products can be purchased at hardware stores or online.
  • Prepare the glue or resin: Follow the manufacturer's instructions when mixing the glue or resin. Make sure that the mixture is thoroughly mixed and homogeneous. Mix the powder from the sink fragment into the two-component adhesive / putty. If you do not have a sink fragment, preferably contact the sink manufacturer for a so-called swatch of the specific sink.
  • Apply glue or resin: Apply a mixture of glue or resin to the damaged area using a small spatula or plastic knife. Fill the damaged area and be careful not to apply more than necessary.
  • Let the glue or resin cure: Let the glue or resin cure according to the manufacturer's instructions. This process can take several hours to several days, depending on the product used and the ambient temperature.
  • Smoothing the surface: Once the adhesive or resin hardens, use fine sandpaper to gently sand off any excess material until the surface is smooth and level with the surrounding granite. You can use fine sandpaper, and then polish it with Cif and the abrasive side of a dish sponge.
Be careful not to grind too deeply and damage the surrounding surface of the sink.
  • Clean the sink: After completing the repair, thoroughly clean the sink with soapy water or a cleaner designed for granite, then rinse and dry the area thoroughly.

Even though the repair of a granite sink may not be perfect, it can restore its functionality and aesthetics, thus extending the lifespan of the sink and keeping your kitchen attractive and usable.
